Description

Note: Size – 1 to 1.5 inch based on availability

The Copper Oscar is a striking color variant of the Oscar fish (Astronotus ocellatus), a popular and intelligent freshwater cichlid. It is known for its vibrant copper, orange, and reddish hues, making it a standout in aquariums.

Key Characteristics:

  • Scientific Name: Astronotus ocellatus
  • Common Name: Copper Oscar, Red Oscar (depending on shade)
  • Size: Can grow up to 12–14 inches (30–35 cm)
  • Lifespan: Around 10–15 years with proper care
  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive, territorial, and highly intelligent
  • Tank Size: Minimum 75 gallons for a single Oscar, larger for multiple fish
  • Water Conditions:
    • Temperature: 74–81°F (23–27°C)
    • pH: 6.5–7.5
    • Soft to moderately hard water
  • Diet: Omnivorous—enjoys high-quality pellets, live/frozen foods (shrimp, worms, crickets), and occasional vegetables
  • Behavior:
    • Can recognize their owner and even beg for food
    • May redecorate the tank by moving substrate and decorations
    • Can be aggressive toward smaller tank mates

Tank Setup & Care:

  • Filtration: Strong filtration is essential, as Oscars produce a lot of waste
  • Substrate: Sand or fine gravel (as they love digging)
  • Decor: Rocks, driftwood, and hiding spots (but avoid sharp decorations)
  • Tank Mates: Best with other large, semi-aggressive fish like other cichlids, large catfish, or plecos (avoid small fish, as they may be eaten)
